Another year has past, and that means another year for Evo!

Evo, or the "Evolution Fighting Game Series" is the worlds biggest Fighting Game Tournament. It always takes place in the beginning of Summer and for the last few years has been held at the Mandalay Bay hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Evo is the "end game" for a lot of the fighting game community because to win at Evo is to win against the world.

This year, Evo is hosting 8 games; with its 9th game being special. But I will cover that more later.

Your Evo 2020 list is as follows;

  • Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
  • Tekken 7
  • Street Fighter V
  • DragonBall FighterZ
  • Samurai Shodown
  • Granblue Fantasy Versus
  • Soulcalibur VI
  • Under Night In-Birth Exe:Late[st]

What's interesting is the lack of Mortal Kombat 11 and BlazBlue. Both games appeared last year and were very popular games.

The newest Arc System Works fighter is also on the list, which just got its North American release today on the PS4.

And now for the 9th game at Evo this year. This is going to be insane since it's been 10 years since this game as been on the main stage at Evo.

The 9th game is a special eight-man invitational tournament to celebrate the 20th-anniversary of Marvel vs Capcom 2.

This tournament will have a $10,000 prize pool. Mr. Wizard - creator of the Evolution Fighting Game Series - announced the first four players who got invited into this special tournament. All of them former Evo champs.

  1. Duc “DucVader” Do: Won Evo; 2000, 2005,
  2. Justin Wong: Won Evo; 2001 - 2004, 2006, 2008, 2010
  3. IFC|Yipes: Won Evo; 2007
  4. Sanford Kelly: Won Evo; 2009

The last four spots will be filled by winning a special qualifier event. The first one will be held at NorCal Regionals in April, the second one will be held at April Annihilation, third will be held at Combo Breaker in May, and the final spot will be held on the first day of Evo 2020

A lot of people are speculating that this is being used for a wider announcement of the much loved series. Three years ago, Capcom released Marvel vs Capcom: Infinite and it didn't do so hot sales wise and because of its poor reception, it never made it to Evo in 2018 and 2019 which was the first time since 2000 that a Marvel vs Capcom game was never on the main stage at an Evolution event.

You can still register for Evo 2020 right here. Mr. Wizard took to Twitter and updated everybody on the current registration count for March.

Smash Bros is number 1! Not at all surprising since Nintendo just announced it's all "Pro Tour" of sorts. While Evo 2020 isn't on the official list of tournaments for the new Nintendo Smash Tour, it is still one of the biggest tournaments in the world with a lot of international players coming in to compete against the best.

The new comer to Evo, Granblue Fantasy: Versus has taken the 3rd spot, which is surprising since it's the newest fighter at Evo, but it has generated interest from all sides of the FGC.

The registration doesn't really mean anything, since a lot of players wait til the last minute to get into their favorite games. But it is interesting to see where the community sees it self currently. With Smash being the most played fighter currently on the market, it's not all that surprising that it is setting at the number one spot.

Evo 2020 starts July 31st and lasts the entire weekend.
