After many teases, misfires, rumors, hints, and nearly two decades of development hell, Mortal Kombat is finally officially on its was to return to the big screen since its last theatrical release Mortal Kombat Annihilation in 1997. Screenwriter Greg Russo confirmed the filming via a tweet to initiate production.
The movie will be directed by Simon McQuiod in his directorial debut with Aquaman's James Wan on as producer alongside Todd Garner. Larry Kasanoff (the founder of Threshold Entertainment who has worked on the previous MK films, as well as overseeing production on Mortal Kombat's spinoffs, like the animated series Defenders of the Realm and Mortal Kombat Conquest), along with E. Bennett Walsh, Michael Clear, and Jeremy Stein will also serve as executive producers.
The confirmed cast is as follows:
- Ludi Lin as Liu Kang.
- Hiroyuki Sanada as Scorpion.
- Chin Han as Shang Tsung.
- Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade.
- Josh Lawson as Kano.
- Lewis Tan possibly playing new character Cole Turner.
- Joe Taslim as Sub-Zero.
- Tadanobu Asano as Raiden.
- Mehcad Brooks as Jax.
- Sisi Stringer as Melina.
The film is slated for a release date of March 21st, 2021.
