If you have never heard of Avatar: The Last Airbender, then you need to go back and watch the original cartoon (yes, cartoon, not anime). The Last Airbender was the one of the best cartoons to ever air on TV.  

The brain child of Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko. It ran for 3 season on Nickelodeon from February 2005 to July 2008. This series has garnered critical and fan acclaim during its 3 year run picking up multiple Annie, Genesis, Peabody, and even Prime Time Emmy Awards.

The show was so popular that its spin off, The Legend of Korra, was quickly picked up by Nickelodeon, and while its a good show. It just isn't better than the original.

There was even a full fledged movie adaption of the first book. Directed by M. Night Shyamalan and released in 2010 to complete and total hatred. Fans and critics alike hated and panned the movie for being well... completely terrible. 

But there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Today, Netflix announced a live action adaption of Avatar the Last Airbender. It was also announced that both, Dimartino and Konietzko will be the show runners and executive producers. 

In a statement, Dimartino and Konietzko said. 

We’re thrilled for the opportunity to helm this live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender. We can’t wait to realize Aang’s world as cinematically as we always imagined it to be, and with a culturally appropriate, non-whitewashed cast.

It’s a once-in-a-lifetime chance to build upon everyone’s great work on the original animated series and go even deeper into the characters, story, action, and world-building. Netflix is wholly dedicated to manifesting our vision for this retelling, and we’re incredibly grateful to be partnering with them.

The new show will go into production in 2019 and air exclusively on Netflix. It's being produced in partnership with Nickelodeon, but it will air entirely on Netflix. 

I am very excited for this show, since I love the original cartoon series. Kinda ehh with Korra though.
