Nintendo Announced, No Virtual Console For The Switch

The Virtual Console. Nintendo's in house emulator that was first brought to us on the Wii platform and then continued onto the Wii-U and 3DS line of consoles, has now been announced for the Nintendo Switch.

And by "announcement" I mean "Nintendo has confirmed that the Switch isn't getting a Virtual Console".

Many speculated that Nintendo was going to finally announce the VC at E3 last year. When E3 came and went, with no announcement, fans thought that Nintendo was still "working on it". After the Switch got Gamecube adapter support late last year, fans were expecting a huge announcement of Gamecube games for the Switch. With many insiders already saying that Nintendo was working on Gamecube support for the Switch, it was only a matter of time before an official announcement was made.

14 months later, we finally got our announcement. The Nintendo Switch is not getting VC support. At all, zero.

Instead, they announced that the Switch is going to get classic games, but they will be lumped in with their paid online service. For $20 dollars a year, you will get online access to multiplayer games, and 20 classic NES games, that will be cycled out monthly. Think Netflix, but for the Switch. They didn't mention anything about SNES games or even Gamecube games. Just NES games.

I think this is very stupid of Nintendo. The Switch, more so than any other Nintendo console, out side of the 3DS, begs for a Virtual Console support. With its portability, larger screen (compared to the 3DS), touch screen controls, and ease of multiplayer support beg for a VC store front.

As a Nintendo fan, and a Switch owner. I am very disappointed with this announcement. I do not care about playing multiplayer Switch games, never mind giving you 20 bucks in order to do it (sorry, its the PC player in me. I do not believe in paying to play online games) but I do care about playing classic NES games - along with SNES. So they told me that I have to spend $20 a year in order to do this and I don't even get to keep the games?

No thanks Nintendo.

The Switch was your chance to make a huge VC store front that featured all of your library. I didn't even care if I had to rebuy the games I already own on both the Wii-U and the 3DS. Even if it was a streaming service, I wouldn't have minded - as much. But to just say no to a VC and then lump it into your online service is a very dumb move. You have a 15 million install base for the Switch. I'm sure some of these people never owned a Wii-U or a 3DS, so they never got to experience the Virtual Console them self. And now, you're not even doing it.

Way to take 5 steps back.
