WWE Games Gives Statement on 2K20's Glitches And Mishaps

Suffice to say, the latest venture in Take 2 Interactive's WWE series of annual wrestling games has garnered headlines, but for all the wrong reasons a video game should be trending. While it isn't uncommon for these entries to have a fair share of graphical clipping and screen tearing, WWE 2K20 has essentially become you very own Botchamania starter kit. Merely several days after its release, the internet and social media has become flooded with a wave of videos and gifs displaying a massive amount of glitches and bugs. Day one of its release, a 20 minute montage of various (and incredibly humorous) scenarios can be found with a mere google search.

Given this a premium full price retail game, customers are amused and frustrated. The hashtag #fixWWE2K20, was trending, prompting an official statement from WWE Games:

"We are listening closely to the feedback that's been shared regarding WWE 2K20 and are aware of the concerns some players are reporting. We're working hard to investigate these concerns and address them as necessary. We expect to have an initial patch ready in the next two weeks, with others to follow. Stay tuned to WWEGames social media channels for more information," the statement reads.

As if the in-game problems weren't enough, it appears that customers who pre-ordered the Smackdown 20th Anniversary Collection may have been missing autographs on a featured Legends plaque, signed by Rey Mysterio, Kurt Angle, or Edge. A fan tweeted Adam Copeland (Edge):

The fan wrote, "@EdgeRatedR not trying to jazz you up late at night but when you spend $130 on something that's advertised you usually expect to get it. Hit me up dude. I would like to see somebody make a right on this because @WWE will just ignore me. No autograph?! Wowww! @WWEgames #WWE2k20 [pouting face emojo]"

Edge, who is currently filming a movie, responded, offering to open a P.O. box and offer anyone disenfranchised to send their unsigned plaques and he'll autograph and return them accordingly:

This is only compounded by Sony offering refunds for customers dissatisfied with the game. There is no official word on whether Microsoft will follow suit.

WWE 2K20 is the first game that will be produced exclusively by 2K, as the game prior to for the last two decades were built off the original engine from the very first Smackdown game on the Playstation released in 2000, which was developed by Yuke's. With Yuke's departure, 2K20 is now essentially built from the ground up, which has resulted in a complete visual overhaul of character models.

This realistically needed a much longer development cycle, but now that the 2K wrestling series has a contracted annual hard release date, no extra time could be allotted to refine the new engine. This is similar to releases of EA Sports' Madden during conversions to have the game run on DICE's Frostbite Engine, but the transition was much easier. Suffice to say, this a growing pains year for the WWE 2K series. Perhaps once the technical issues are ironed out, a more [relatively] stable product could be expected with future releases, but this serves as a cautionary tale about accountability and quality assurance for premium mainstream releases.
