Yakuza 7 Shifts The Series Into A Turn-Based RPG

Yes, that's read correctly. The seventh entry in Ryu Ga Gotoku Studios and Sega's critically acclaimed open world beat'em up action game, titled Whereabouts of Light & Darkness, will center its combat around turn-based mechanics. This was certainly seen as very unexpected, to say the least.

The main protagonist will also be shifted from long-time fan favorite Kazuma Kiryu to Ichiban Kasuga. Kasuga, who had previsuosly spent 18 years in prison after taking the fall for his boss's crimes, finds himself abandoned by his clan.

It will certainly be interesting to see the reception to this abrupt change of plans to what many fans have been accustomed to for so long. For instance, when the return of the Fear Effect series was announced in the form of Sedna, gamers were ecstatic. Made on a lower budget, the series shifted from a third person action game to more a Diablo style action RPG with an isometric camera angle, and the game was met with very middling praise. Who knows, perhaps this will be accepted. I consider this one of Sega's strangest and perhaps gutsier decisions.

Yakuza 7 is expected to be released in Japan January 16th 2020 for the Playstation 4.
