Battlefield 2042 Official Reveal Trailer

While details of DICE's newest entry in their long-running first person shooter were leaked hours before, taking the wind out of the sails prior to, the official reveal of the latest Battlefield, titled "Battlefield 2042", launched, giving a first look at what it has to offer. After Battlefield V, an entry mired in controversy before and after its launch, DICE shifts direction with its stronger emphasis on multiplayer.

Battlefield 2042 focuses on three multiplayer modes. Both Conquest and Breakthrough are back, now capable of supporting up to 128 players on Xbox Series X|S and the PlayStation 5 (PS4 and the Xbox One supports 64 players, and the maps will be scaled down to a degree. It's unclear if this puts ice on the possibility on cross-generation and/or cross-play capabilities, DICE hasn't announced anything to confirm this).

There's two new modes, one called Hazard Zone, but DICE has yet to reveal the details on what it is supposed to be as of this reporting, only stating it's "squad-based and high stakes". Perhaps fans can expect a take on an Apex Legends-like structure, though that might run at odds with Respawn Entertainment's team-based PvP game, which is also under Electronic Arts' umbrella.

Noticeably absent, and possibly the most controversial so far is the lack of a single player campaign, meaning this entry completely places its onus on co-op and online versus features. With a game labeled as a "love letter to the fans", it seems a touch divided on which player base they're aiming to focus on. Despite its more team-based structure, the Battlefield series has always lagged behind the Call of Duty series in terms of appeal and sales. Warzone is a free to play battle royale, and as of April 2021, has amassed a user count of over 100 million players. Battlefield 2042, which will be retail price at launch (US)$70 for the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S and (US)$60 for the PS4 and Xbox One, has a lot to compete against when it comes to pulling players who may have been aloof about the franchise into their ecosystem.

Battlefield 2042 is slated for October 22, 2021 for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PS4, and Xbox One
