In a stunning revelation, news has recently broke that Sony has backed out of a deal that would continue to balance the relationship between Sony's rights to Spider-Man and Disney/Marvel. According to Deadline, Disney has asked for a 50/50 co-financing agreement on future Spider-Man films. Sony had proposed to keep the arrangement at a 5% range of first dollar gross. Tom Rothman offered compromises, but Disney declined. Back in 2015, Disney/Marvel and Sony laid out a deal that allowed sharing the rights of Spider-Man to be featured in various movie projects. Movies like Venom and Into the Spiderverse, which exist outside of Marvel's Cinematic Universe umbrella, are a part of this arrangement.
It can be speculated that the massive success of both Venom and Spider-Man: Far From Home prompted this move from Sony and they may intend to spin their own universe. This means that director Kevin Feige is ousted and no longer has any stake in production on the Spider-Man side of events. It could theoretically imply this also means perhaps another reboot of Spider-Man could be in the works with Sony's vision for the character to fit their future plans.
This could be fascinating to follow as more unfolds, this looks to retroactively reverse Tom Holland's Spider-Man out of the MCU at some point. According to sources, under the current deal, there are two more films with Holland on board. Feige will likely have no creative input on those. On the Sony Pictures side of events, a currently unnamed Spiderverse sequel is in the works with David Callaham as screenwriter, as well as a Venom follow-up. With Disney's acquisition of 20th Century Fox and the Marvel licenses that are in tow, Kevin Feige will still undoubtedly be very busy working on creative directions for X-Men, the Fantastic Four, and Deadpool. And Disney still owns the marketing rights to Spider-Man. So the implications of this will certainly be fascinating, as Sony has taken back the film rights to arguably the most popular super on the planet.
More details on this story will follow.
[Update August 20, 6:50pm ET] In clarifying the situation, A Sony representative spoke to i09 about the matter. The dispute had been a longstanding issue over a producer credit with Kevin Feige. According to the statement, Feige has many creative contributions towards other Spider-Man films with none accredited to his name as producer. That's Hollywood, I suppose.
