Daisuke Sato, Yakuza Producer, Would Like To Develop A Sonic The Hedgehog Game

In a recent SEGA 60th Anniversary interview with Sega Europe, Daisuke Sato, a lead producer of Ryu Ga Gotoku Studios (colloquially known as RGG) was asked about any of Sega's IPs that he never had a chance to work on, which one he had the most interest in. Sato brought up the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise, and speculated about reinventing what the series has been:

“It’s an IP that I haven’t come to before. In the sense that I want to try it,… well, Sonic. After all, when you hear SEGA you think Sonic. I’d like to get involved once at least. But for me, the so call Sonic, is well, if I were to do it, I wouldn’t do Sonic as it was. I would like to make a completely different Sonic.”

I feel like a reinvention of the Sonic the Hedgehog series has been long overdue. There's been a few spiritual successors and attempts to redefine how Sonic plays, especially since the leap to 3D. The last few games produced by Sonic Team like Sonic Forces and Lost World essentially follow the template established by 2010's Sonic Colors and 2011's Sonic Generations. Creator of Sonic the Hedgehog and former head of Sonic Team, Yuji Naka, departed Sega and developed Rodea the Sky Soldier for the Wii and Wii U, an attempted refresher on how a modern Sonic game would play. It was met with mixed to poor reception.

Granted, this isn't confirmation that such a plan is in play, but anything can happen. The infamous 2006 Sonic the Hedgehog (popularly known as Sonic '06) was destined to be the kind of open world Sonic adventure many had hoped for. Rushed development left the final product riddled with game breaking glitches, graphical instability, and unfinished environments.

Would you be interested in playing a Sonic the Hedgehog stylized with a bit of Yakuza flavoring?
