Let's rewind to 2009.

Steam held 70% of all digital distribution on PC. If you were a PC gamer, you had Steam installed. We accepted that, it was reliable, had a great section of games, and their sales made it very hard to not accept them. They were trusted among PC gamers. They were the market leader after all.

Everything was on there, from Assassin's Creed 2 to Mass Effect. Then late in 2009 EA announced that Battlefield 3 wasn't going to be releasing on Valve's platform. EA didn't really care about PC gaming. The bulk of their money came from consoles. PC was just secondary to them. That made PC gamers distrust them and their DRM vocabulary during Spore's release didn't help them any.

EA's newly created launcher wasn't ready for prime time. It was bulky, it took system resources and never returned them. More importantly, it crashed constantly. EA, at the time, didn't seem to care. They were removing their games from Steam and putting them on their own storefront starting with Battlefield 3

That was 10 years ago and while Origin's has improved, and even started putting up indie games and games from other developers. They even offered refunds on game purchases way before Steam did. Despite all of that though. It still never had the market like Steam does.

Today, EA announced that it is coming home.

Starting with Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, EA is going to also be releasing their games on Steam again. This is a long time coming and great for Steam.

In recent years, Steam has been in a battle with Epic over who is going to be the home for PC gamers. Randy Pitchford said in a statement back in April that he gives steam "5 to 10 years" before it dies off. This announcement could however, change everything. If EA, who once hated Valve and the Steam platform, is now coming back to it. It shows that EA has full confidence in Valve and Steam has a platform.

Star Wars is just the beginning also. EA said that games will be trickling out on Steam over the coming months with Apex Legends, Battlefield 5, and FIFA 20 coming some time next year. There will also be no division between Origin and Steam players. Origin players and Steam players will be playing with each other.

EA Access, EA's subscription service, will also be released on Steam in the spring of next year. That it self has a massive list of games with new ones being added all the time.

It's been 10 years since EA locked their games behind their own storefront. With this announcement in place, Steam is about to get a lot of EA titles that never appeared on their platform before and that is good for all of us.
