Electronic Arts Will Be Losing Their Exclusive License To FIFA

The exclusivity rights EA has to Federation Internationle de Football Association will be coming to and end after an inability to agree to terms on an extension on their partnership. Originally signed the deal with Electronic Arts in 1993 (beginning to christen their sports subdivision "EA Sports"),  FIFA had been reportedly aiming to double its $150 million dollar annual licensing fee, but it now looks like a FIFA 23 will not happen. FIFA released a statement:

"FIFA is bullish and excited about the future in gaming and eSports for football, and it is clear that this needs to be a space that is occupied by more than one party controlling all rights."

Gaming and eSports are the fastest-growing media verticals on the planet, with new and diverse types of games launching continuously. It is therefore of crucial importance for FIFA and its stakeholders to maximise all future opportunities for football and gaming fans."

This is a big loss for Electronic Arts, as the FIFA brand's worldwide popularity helped garner millions in sales for their football game. Through eSports, EA's Ultimate Team mode was worth over $1.6 billion dollars. While there has been no official comment from EA regarding FIFA's statement, there's reports that they have trademarked "EA Sports FC" and are looking to rebrand the series.
