"The speech for the annual game was written two years ago, but it was not used."
Following the results of The Game Awards 2024 for, which saw Team ASOBI's 3D action platform title Astrobot take home Game of the Year, there appears to be some misunderstanding from some peers. Black Myth: Wukong's producer Feng Li seemingly takes umbrage with the award selection process, as the action RPG failed to take home the top prize. He posted some statements which have sparked some controversy in the online communities.
Feng Li would take to Weibo, China's social media platform (thanks to Google translate) to speak his mind, which seems like a combination of ambiguous frustration from himself and the community, as well as confusion throughout the lengthy post. Among the key statements was Li saying he had an acceptance speech written for Black Myth: Wukong's perceived victory two years prior.
"The four nominations for Black Myth: Wukong (Best Action Game, Best Art Direction, Best Game Direction, and Game of the Year) are all the first in China. In the end, it won the Best Action and Player's Voice, especially the Player's Voice, which is gratifying.
But I must admit that there are disappointments and regrets, and more of them are giving up illusions.
The games nominated this year were all exceptional, but honestly, I still can’t figure out what the criteria were for Game of the Year. I feel like I came all the way here for nothing!"
Li would congratulate Team ASOBI and the other nominees, as well as the players who have enjoyed the game. Black Myth: Wukong did win the award for Best Action Game, beating Stellar Blade, Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, Warhammer: Space Marine II, and Helldivers II. It also took home the Player's Voice Award, so Game Science's app didn't get completely swept.
There is a chance that elements and portions of his statements may be lost in translation, but the general perception of Feng Li seeming like a "sore loser" of sorts overrides the passion he and the staff put into the project.
What are your thoughts on Feng Li's words? Is he justified in feeling his game was snubbed?
