Keelworks' Space Shooter, Cygni: All Guns Blazing, Will Be Published By Konami

Scottish developer Keelworks has announced they have entered a partnership with Konami and signed a deal to publish their vertical scrolling twin-stick shooter Cygni: All Guns Blazing, which is set to come to Steam and home consoles. Against overwhelming odds, the player only has their ship to take to war against a hostile alien armada. A genre as classic as they come, this shooter looks to blend elements of the old school arcade SHMUPs along with traits of modern era games from a talented staff who has a history in animation.

Keelworks was founded by brothers Nareg and Meher Kalenderian, and Helen Souma, who all originally hail from Lebanon. Nareg has a history in film, working as a CG supervisor and visual effects artist on the 2012 film "The Collector", as well as spending time with Pixar. Helen's credentials include art directing, notable for her work on Arabic CGI film Bilial: A New Breed Of Hero. Meher acts as founder and CEO of Keelworks, and has experience with UK and international multi-pound funds and projects for organizations. Keelworks spoke about their partnership with Konami and their inspiration leading to game design and development:

"We all have special childhood experiences that we cherish well into adulthood and often wish to recreate and re-experience out of nostalgia and passion.

One of our motivations for the development of KeelWorks’ debut title, CYGNI: All Guns Blazing, was deeply rooted in our memories of playing shmups in our youth, ever since the days of Atari and Amiga. We have always had a longing to combine our passion for gaming with our diverse professional skills and experiences to contribute to the revival of the genre and its reintroduction to broader audiences through current and next generation technology.

...After extensive negotiations amid a pandemic, KeelWorks is delighted to announce that it has now partnered with Konami Digital Entertainment, an established global publisher of video games."

Noting the brief nod to Gradius on the PC Engine, acknowledging Konami's rich history with the SHMUP genre. A release date is currently not announced for Cygni: All Guns Blazing as of this writing.
