Konami Out Of E3, Reports They're 'In Deep Development Of Key Projects'

Konami has been in the new headlines lately. While a lot of it has been strong speculation and rumors, the fact that they're name has risen rather often in recent months is a strong indicator that something is brewing. April 20th, they announced on Twitter that they're pulling out of E3 2021, but there's a silver lining to that news that may be very enticing, indicating that they have software they are deep into development with.

"Due to timing, we will not be ready to present at E3 this year. We want to reassure our fans that we are in deep development on a number of key projects, so please stay tuned for some updates in the coming months. While we are not participating this year, we have great respect for the ESA and know that 2021 will be a great success. We will continue to support the ESA and wish the best to all the participants at this year's show"

While a purchase of the brand from Microsoft or Sony was not very likely, given the climate of studio acquisitions, some of the behavior from Konami leads one to believe that they have something in the works. Rumors of a Metal Gear Solid remaster have been hinted by veteran voice actor and voice of Solid Snake David Hayter, believing it's happening, according to his insider. Hayter was brought back by Konami to reprise the role for Snake in Super Smash Bros Ultimate after Hideo Kojima overlooked him in favor of Kiefer Sutherland for Metal Solid V: The Phantom Pain in 2014.

Also back in February, an interview with Silent Hill composer Akira Yamaoka was pulled off Youtube where he mentioned something coming this summer, stating [quote] "...it's the one you're kinda hoping to hear about."

While Konami has made record profits in recent years due to a combination of eSports with Pro Evolution Soccer, their pachinko hardware, and advances in hardware technology, their reputation has been soured for years as a AAA game developer. After iterating that recent software efforts have been met with less than stellar opinion from fans and gamers (the criticized 2019 release Contra Rogue Corps being), Konami wishes to show fans that they aren't ready to give up on software development. A resurrection of Getsu Fuma Den, shown during Nintedo's Indie World presentation, captures beloved traits form modern successes Hades and Dead Cells. If an earnest return to Silent Hill or Metal Gear, be it remasters or brand new entries, are developed with the care Konami states, it can repair the wounds still left from 2015. Time will tell.
