Longest Running Video Game Magazine Game Informer Closed Down By GameStop

Getting your video game news via physical magazine became a lost art by the late 2000's, and most had faded out when internet access became more prevalent. Now the longest running game magazine publication has come to an end, as Game Informer's doors are now closed.

"After 33 thrilling years of bringing you the latest new, reviews, and insights from the ever evolving world of gaming, it is with a heavy heart that we announce the closure of game Informer," the publication said in a statement posted to Twitter/X. "From the early days of pixelated adventures to today's immersive virtual realms, we've been honored to share this incredible journey with all of you, our loyal readers. While our presses may stop, the passion for gaming we've cultivated together will live on."

With their first issue date August of 1991, the magazine was published by Funcoland, who was later bought by GameStop in 2000. As publications like Electronic Gaming Monthly, GamPro, and Nintendo Power wrapped up, Game Informer's ties with the retail giant aided in keeping it afloat, becoming an integral part of GameStop's Power Up Rewards program, bundling subscriptions with the membership.

By 2019, seeing financial on the decline, GameStop began laying off Game Informer staff. Long-time editor-in-chief and founder Andy McNamara parted from the publication to take a job with Electronic Arts. June 2024 was its 367th and final issue, with the remainder of the staff being laid off. McNamara was one of many former and current employees voicing their dismay of the news.
