Mai Shiranui Bounds Into Street Fighter 6 This February

Fatal Fury star Mai Shiranui makes her way to Street Fighter 6, as the Season 2 character DLC rolls on. Following the success of Fatal Fury protagonist and SNK mascot Terry Bogard's successful addition to the roster, players now get their first look at Mai's gameplay in the newest trailer. She's also sporting her outfit she will be wearing in SNK's upcoming sequel, Fatal Fury: City of Wolves.

Along with potentially teasing special pre-match intros (Mai and Chun-Li clash with Drive Impacts after the announcer says "Round 1...!", separating and squaring off before "FIGHT"), Mai's face also saw a slight redesign, compared to her World Tour trailer reveal, now sporting softer and more defined features. Mai seemingly references the criticism of her appearance that made the rounds in the fighting game circles, compared to her 3D model design in King of Fighters and the Dead or Alive series. Or I'm overthinking it, and it's a reference to her ample bosom, a defining trait that has followed the character since her debut in Fatal Fury 2.

Play style wise, Mai has always been a solid rushdown character in the King of Fighters series. In Street Fighter 6's Drive System, which already prioritizes strong offense, the kunoichi's nimble moveset seems to allow her to get in close, apply pressure, and stay in close. Something new for SF6, her Kachousen projectile, where she throws her fan at her opponent, can be charged. This seems to strike whomever it hits, causing it to pop in the air and land back onto them, granting an extra hit. By burning meter, her Overdrive version throws multiple fans, adding to her pressure.

Mai's Ryuuenbu, a spinning attack that whips her opponent with flames, is safe on block when using her Light version, when properly spaced. Hissatsu Shinobi Bachiher cartwheeling elbow strike, travels depending on which button is used. In the trailer, it appears to be a strong combo finisher, adding extra damage. The OD version sends her through the air, possibly form some crossup potential.

Mai Shiranui makes her debut February 5th, 2025. Street Fighter 6 is currently available for the Xbox Series X|S. PlayStation 5, PS4, and PC (Steam)
