Mass Effect's long anticipated remastering released a trailer that provided some robust information on what fans can expect from BioWare's sharpened space opera trilogy. Mass Effects 1-3 will see sharpened gameplay improvements, HDR and 4K resolution support, and a consolidation of the three games to ensure it's a more complete and cohesive package. Character creation will also sport an expanded option of hair, make-up, and skin tone selections.

Unfortunately, it seems like same-sex options will not be included in the original games. The option was set to be able to hook up with the pansexual character Jack with either the male or female Shepard, but according to Mass Effect 2 writer Brian Kindregan in an interview with TheGamer, backlash from Fox News in 2010 and their coverage of it lead it to be altered as just a romance option for the male Shepard.

However, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S owners will not see the remastered experience on the ninth generation consoles, but for a pretty good reason. In an interview with IGN, director Mac Waters stated that a full next generation launch of the collection would be "a bridge too far". 

"To me if I'm buying a game on this next-generation of hardware, I expect a lot from it, and I think it's more than what we could have pushed [Unreal Engine 3] to do, and again more than we could've done with a true remaster," he said. "To me it would have felt a little disingenuous. I think it's better suited for the next Mass Effect."

With the next Mass Effect game confirmed, and likely in development for the PS5 and Series X|S, it's more than reasonable to focus resources in ensuring the newest entry in the series is optimized to the best of its capabilities. It will be forward compatible for the next gen consoles.

The Mass Effect Legendary Edition will be available May 14 2021 for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Windows.
