Microsoft further defines its mission statement of accessibility and convenience in its newest trailer that states what an Xbox is and can be. Based on the video, seemingly anything, be it VR headsets, phones, laptops, and various handheld devices! In recent years, the Xbox has been branding itself as more a service, rather than relying strictly on the Xbox console to house its software or its subscription platform, Game Pass.
With their robust cloud streaming infrastructure, Microsoft wants Xbox to be available on as many devices as possible.
In short, the idea of the console wars can be put to rest (whomever wins or loses is more an argument the fans can pitch, if they choose to). Yes, the Xbox has not particularly lit the marketplace on fire when it comes to console unit sales compared to Nintendo and Sony (28 million sales between the Series X and S as of June 2024, according to Games Radar). So Microsoft course corrected, allowing access to Game Pass on PC and mobile devices, which has evolved into apps on devices like the Amazon Fire TV stick and smart TVs.
Does this mean Xbox consoles are done? Not to worry. In an interview with the Rolling Stone, Xbox CEO Phil Spencer clarified that future development of Xbox systems remain in their plans, stating definitively, “We’ll definitely do more consoles in the future, and other devices.”
Besides, Xboxes will still be a thing. What else will the software be developed on? And cloud streaming technology was the inevitable future they were planning for.
