Minecraft To Release Free Education Update

With many kids stuck at home during the COVID-19 quarantine, schools are having to deal with this pandemic and education of the billions of kids who can't leave their house to attend classes.

This is where Microsoft and Mojang are stepping in.

In a blog posted today, Mojang has announced that it will be releasing free educational content in its popular sandbox game Minecraft.

Educators around the world are doing everything they can to provide digital lessons for the half a billion students who are out of school due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This is not an easy task and we want to do our part to help keep young minds sharp and stimulated.

All of the lessons are available today and will be free to download until June 30th of 2020. They are usable on any device that Minecraft is playable on, so literally everything but your toaster.

There are currently 10 lessons released to test and education kids. Stuff like creative writing, marine biology, and history lessons.

In another blog posted today. Head of Xbox Phil Spencer shared his thoughts on this.

The educational content we’ve curated lets players explore the International Space Station though a partnership with NASA, learn to code with a robot, visit famous Washington D.C. landmarks, find and build 3D fractals, learn what it’s like to be a marine biologist, and so much more.

I personally think this is very cool. Most school age children already play Minecraft, so why not use the game that they are playing to also educate them? I mean it makes sense. Especially since we have no idea how much longer this virus is going to last for which could spell the end of this school year. Kids are falling behind, why not? It couldn't hurt.

Kudos to Microsoft and Mohjang for thinking of this.
