There have been a lot of talk about exclusives lately, mainly because of one game. The Square-Enix published Marvel Avengers.

Since the big State of Play reveal. Square has announced a number of "PlayStation exclusives" for PS4 players. One of them being Spider-Man.

Besides Spider-Man, there is going to be a number of advantages for buying the PS4 version - and later the PS5 version of Marvel Avengers. Thankfully, I don't have to list them since Square-Enix released a video detailing these. Which coincidentally enough called "PlayStation Advantages".

This is amazing news if you own a PlayStation and plan on buying it for that console. However, if you plan on buying it for other consoles, this is a little disheartening. Crystal Dynamics, the developers, have confirmed that there will not be exclusive characters for the other two platforms that the game is releasing on (X1 and PC).

If you're going to go this far with it, just make it a PlayStation exclusive. I get it, "business is business", but it seems like your preferred console is Sony and the others are just after thoughts? Quick cash grabs, cause you know people will buy an Avengers game without thinking twice of how badly they are getting screwed by the inferior version.

See, Square-Enix is basically devaluing the other versions of this game - by favoring one platform - and then that platform is saying how much better the game is going to be when you play it on there. Which makes sense, since it's getting the complete version of the game. If every platform was getting a character, this wouldn't be an issue, but it's not. One of the single most popular characters, not just Marvel but comic books in general, is going to be exclusive to one platform.

I can hear you now "But Sony owns the movie rights!" and that's true. Sony does own the movie rights to Spider-Man. They don't however own the video game rights. Disney does, and Spider-Man has been in other Marvel games on other platforms. Last years' Ultimate Alliance 3 on the Switch being one of them.

While Spider-Man being exclusive to Sony isn't a surprise at all, this is rather bad for the player base at large. Two-thirds of the platforms that this game is releasing on, won't have access to an Avengers character, and it's not a side character, it's an actual main character. This would be like releasing a Justice League game and only having Batman playable on the Switch.

Instead of making Spider-Man a special bonus for PlayStation owners, you have now made this a "must buy on PS4" for those who had no interest in buying it for that platform.

You are removing the choice for players and that's an awful move.

Crystal Dynamics' co-head Scott Amos said in an interview "we are making this game for everybody". Unless you're playing on an Xbox or a PC. Then they're only making some of the game for you. The rest is for Sony.

As I mentioned above, Crystal Dynamics said that no other exclusive characters will be released for the other two platforms. They didn't however, say those platforms won't be getting other exclusives.

A Reddit leak by u/smoove4252 said that both Verizon and Intel will have exclusive costumes for Marvel Avengers. No details have been released on how to get these - but speculation suggests that the Intel costumes will be a give-a-way with their new KA CPU's that will be releasing soon.

If you don't think any of this is bad, well then. How do you feel about microtransactions? Cause this game is going to be loaded with them! Square-Enix has confirmed that Marvel's Avengers will in fact have microtransactions, but have said that this "won't affect gameplay" that it's just going to be skins. They have also confirmed that some character skins will only be obtainable through microtransactions. While characters will be free, DLC won't be. It has been suggested that Square-Enix is already looking at releasing expansions for the game, which will cost money.

We will see how this works for them.

Marvel's Avengers will be released on September 4th for the PS4, X1, PC, Stadia (LOL), and later in 2021 for the next generation consoles.

As always, this has been James with Game Fix. Game on everybody!
