Netflix App Shutting Down On The Wii U And 3DS

The fates of the 3DS and the Wii U had been on the wall for quite some time and support for both platforms has been winding down as Netflix will be removed from the discontinued systems. Owns who have downloaded and deleted the app will be able to reacquire it, and it will still function. If you haven't prior to, it's now impossible, meaning you'll have to access Netflix from...virtually other electronic device. Nintendo issued a statement regarding the removal of the app on their page:

"Starting Dec 31st, 2020, the Netflix app will no longer be available for new users to download from Nintendo eShop on the Wii U console or Nintendo 3DS family of systems. During that time, it will be possible for existing users to re-download these applications. Service for existing users will continue until June 30th, 2021. Thank you to everyone who enjoyed Netflix on these platforms over the years."

It also looks like efforts to expedite the shutdown of the Wii U and 3DS eShops is being expedited. Lego City Undercover and Lego City Undercover: The Chase Begins has been removed from the Wii U and 3DS eShops respectively. The Chase Begins is only available on the 3DS, while Lego City Undercover has been ported to the Switch.

I was, and still remain, a big fan of the Wii U, and its efforts to be a multimedia platform of sorts for Nintendo were promising in theory, but the result of poor marketing on Nintendo's part and a dearth of third party support lead it to being Nintendo's worst selling home console at just over 13 million unit sales. It was capable of using streaming apps like the aforementioned Netflix, Crunchyroll, and Amazon Prime Video. The Switch has yet to sport the apps many fans have expected to see on it like Netflix, but Hulu has been available on it since 2017.
