Four years ago today, Firaxis Games announced Civilization 6, or Civ6 for short.

Since its release on PC on October 2016, it has seen several free updates and two major expansion packs - Rise and Fall in 2018 and Gathering Storm in 2019. It also, for the first time, got a home console release (PS4/X1) and even managed to get ports to the Nintendo Switch and iOS of all things.

With today marking the 4 year anniversary of its first announcement, the team over at Firaxis Games has huge announcement.

Civilization 6 - New Frontier Pass

Starting this month, we are getting the first of six new DLC packs to be released bi-monthly. Starting with the Maya and Gran Colombia pack to be released on May 21st.

The Maya and Gran Colombia pack is going to add two new leaders to the game - which haven't been revealed yet. We will also be getting new buildings, new units, new city-states, resources, Natural Wonders, and a new game mode titled "Apocalypse". In the new game mode, you will be able to unleash all sorts of fun onto your civilization in the form of meteor showers, forest fires, solar flares, and even an asteroid.

Then in July, we will get the second pack. Ethiopia. This pack will also include a new leader, new districts & infrastructure, and another new game mode "Secret Societies". Nothing as of right now is known about this new game mode.

Over the course of the year we will get new more new packs. In total, the new content is going to add eight new civilizations, nine new leaders, six new game modes, and more.

The New Frontier Pass will cost $40, if you don't want to invest in the pack, you can buy those civilizations you like for a cost of $5 each. However, if you buy the pack it will save you 2 bucks over buying everything individually. You will also gain access to the Teddy Roosevelt and Catherine De Medici persona packs which will provide new leader models, backgrounds, and new gameplay bonuses when using either of those two leaders. These two things will release in July along with the Ethiopia DLC.

That's not all. In between all of this, Firaxis is also going to be releasing free updates for everybody including new maps, new scenarios, a balance update, and a lot more.

With more players than ever being able to enjoy Civ 6 and with everybody having to stay inside, this game is a great way to pass the time. This new model of delivery could also be a taste of what's to come for the future of the franchise.

Personally, I'm excited. I may just install it again and get lost in the world of Civ 6 all over again.
