The modern Xbox controller has always been solid, seemingly following a "if it's not broke, don't fix it" moniker. Many were surprised that the launch of the Xbox Series X|S didn't come with a controller as progressive as the PS5 DualSense, instead opting to stick with a design and scheme that's close to the Xbox one Elite model (insert joke about batteries here). It looks like Microsoft might have something in the works regarding a new device with an interesting function.
Based on a new patent from Microsoft, a controller design for the Xbox Series X sports an LCD display screen. According to the drawings provided, the screen display will be at the top of the controller, above the Share and guide button, which are relocated to accommodate the screen. Ergonomically, it still appears mostly the same design. "Local Gaming System" may indicate the Xbox console and PCs.
"Cloud-based gaming system" could imply that this new controller can be linked with other local devices, likely to connect to the xCloud for Game Pass Ultimate accessibility. As of this writing, there appears to be no other speculation on the prospects for this new controller. It will be interesting to see how far Microsoft intends to push this project beyond schematics, this appears to be a controller capable of Stadia-like peripheral. Mostly just speculation on what may be in store.
