Nintendo Blocks Development Team From Adding Wii/GameCube Emulator 'Dolphin' To Steam

Score another victory for Big N under the fight against emulation, which in recent years has become a contentious topic among the gaming community. This win comes in the form of postponing the Dolphin Emulator (software that allows the play of GameCube and Nintendo Wii games) from launching on Steam. On the Dolphin website, a short statement was made addressing the DMCA:

It is with much disappointment that we have to announce that the Dolphin on Steam release has been indefinitely postponed. We were notified by Valve that Nintendo has issued a cease and desist citing the DMCA against Dolphin's Steam page, and have removed Dolphin from Steam until the matter is settled. We are currently investigating our options and will have a more in-depth response in the near future.

We appreciate your patience in the meantime.

Pointed out on Twitter by user @LuigiBlood, the result of the DMCA is likely due to the coding of the Dolphin emulator. Under the quote tweet, they quote the DMCA directly, stating "the Dolphin emulator operates by incorporating these cryptographic keys without Nintendo’s authorization and decrypting the ROMs at or immediately before runtime."

The legality of emulation is established (RetroArch and other emulators are available to download via Steam), the Dolphin Emulator using the Wii Common Key as its source code dodges anti-piracy measures. Nintendo may have threaded a needle in finding a means to block this transition for the time being. The team developing for the Dolphin will have to search through countermeasures in order to see this through.
