Nintendo Formally Reveals The 'Switch 2', And Its Backwards Compatibility

Many of the rumors and speculations about the Nintendo Switch (for the most part) can finally be put to rest. As it was strongly indicated, the gaming giant has given everyone their first look at the Switch successor, the aptly named "Switch 2". A pretty easy name and branding change.

The reveal came via a YouTube trailer that was just under two and a half minutes, which didn't showcase any new software, but an introduction to lot of the quality of life changes the new hybrid console welcomes.

The changes new model brings some of the design choices the Nintendo Switch OLED introduced. Along with a larger screen display with an improved kickstand for a better experience playing undocked, the Joycons appear a little bigger and slightly more ergonomically friendly. With the larger size, the extra grips that came with the original Switch Joycons may be a design choice they no longer need.

The analog sticks seem more sturdy and detailed, with the face buttons more defined. Instead of sliding the Joycons onto the Switch, they now "snap" via magnetic ports. This likely further confirms that the original Joycons may not be compatible, but that remains unknown as of this writing. Given how those succumbed to drift after time, I don't see that as particularly a bad thing.

When it comes to marketing, labeling it the "Switch 2" is probably the easiest decision made. It infers the consumer that what they're buying is indeed the next iteration that must be focused on. This was an issue that led to the misdirection of the Wii U, which confused customers and alienated third party developers.

Backwards Compatibility

While no information on new software was addressed (A Mario Kart is advertised, and the physical kart for Super Mario Wonder is highlighted), fans can rest assured that Nintendo immediately clarifies that physical backwards compatibility will be supported, as well as digital. The video states that "certain Nintendo Switch games may not be supported or fully compatible with Nintendo Switch 2".

I feel like this could concern some Switch exclusive software that utilized the IR sensor, like Nintendo Labo, 1-2 Switch, some Mario Party features, and Ring Fit Adventure. More details on that will come later.

More details on the Nintendo Switch 2 will come later in an upcoming Nintendo Direct scheduled for April 2nd, 2025.
