Nintendo Strongarms Riptide Tournament Organizers Into Cancelling Smash Bros Brawl Event

Riptide is a 3 day convention that annually holds events for Smash Bros., Splatoon 2, and Rivals of Aether, and was set to hold the first in-person offline event for Super Smash Bros. this coming September in Sandusky, Ohio at the Kalahari Resort. There was to be much anticipation for a special mod of Super Smash Bros. Brawl called Project+, the successor to Project M, and it's treated as a main attraction of sorts.

However, Nintendo wasn't happy with this, and according to Riptide TOs, were forced to cancel the tournament, very likely due to the use of their property. Riptide released a statement:

"Riptide was contacted recently by a Nintendo of America, Inc. representative regarding our Project+ events. As a result of that conversation, there will be no Project+ tournaments or setups at Riptide. We understand the impact of this news for the Project+ community. We will be contacting all attendees registered for Project+ events with further information and the updated refund request procedure shortly."

This is the second Smash Bros. major Nintendo has canceled in 13 months, previously shutting down the online-only Super Smash Bros. Melee tournament that going to be hosted by The Big House that was going to take place December 4 through the sixth in 2020. The Riptide event being an offline tourney is even more perplexing. The servers for Super Smash Brothers Brawl were shut down in 2014 after Nintendo terminated use of them for the Nintendo Wii and DS, so offline casual events is the only way this game can be enjoyed.

The Riptide event is still taking place. Smash Bros Ultimate, Splatoon 2, and Rivals of Aether will remain scheduled.
