While the Wii U and 3DS era for Nintendo has been long over, it'll pretty much be official after news broke earlier this week. It is a little surprising that the digital storefronts for the ill-fated console and 3DS line of handhelds remained open for THIS long, all things must come to an end, as Nintendo announced they will be decommissioning eShop functions for both next year.
As of late March 2023, it will no longer be possible to make purchases in Nintendo eShop for the Wii U system and the Nintendo 3DS family of systems. It will also no longer be possible to download free content, including game demos. Furthermore, as this date draws closer, related services will cease to function:
We thank you for supporting Nintendo eShop on Wii U and the Nintendo 3DS family of systems. While we hope that you will continue to enjoy using these systems, we have taken this opportunity to prepare a website where you can look back on your time with them via various play statistics. Please visit https://my-nintendo-3ds-wiiu-memories.nintendo.com/.
This is an announcement many should have seen coming, and the internet is upset. However, how long do fans expect digital storefronts on aging hardware to remain open? The Wii U, while a serviceable device, was Nintendo's worst selling mainline console. Its directionless marketing and confusing name lead it to peaking at only 13.5 million sales in its span. The 3DS realistically kept Nintendo relevant until the Switch became a smash hit, it was quietly discontinued by 2020.
You still have a calendar year to grab some of your favorite eShop games on both platforms.
