Nvidia's GeForce Now Adds Priority Tier, Increases Price For New Customers

On Thursday, Nvidia announced that it will be making a change to its subscription tier for its GeForce Now cloud gaming subscription service. The Priority tier will replace the Founder's tier. The RTX support and extended session length will remain intact. However, it will come with a price hike for new users. The $4.99 per month will double to $9.99, and Nvidia will begin offering a $99.99 per year for the Priority tier. The free tier will still remain, offering standard service and 1 hour sessions.

Nvidia said in a statement that the price increase represents the platform's evolution since its beta tested launch back in 2015.

“As GeForce Now enters year two, and rapidly approaches 10 million members, the service is ready to kick things up a notch,” the company spoke. “GeForce Now launched out of beta last February with Founders memberships — a limited time, promotional plan. On Thursday, Founders memberships will close to new registrations and Priority memberships, the new premium offering, will be introduced.”

If some members saw that they are still being billed the Founder's tier price of $4.99, it was a show of good will on Nvidia's part for members whose accounts were "in good standing". An active membership was required to take advantage of that perk.

"If for any reason your paid Founders membership ends, you make a billing modification, downgrade or if there is a termination," Nvidia said in an FAQ article about the transition, "the benefit is forfeited and cannot be restarted. “Members need to be subscribed to the Founders membership as of 3/17/2021, and keep their membership in good standing, to be eligible for the benefit. If you were previously a Founders member but downgraded, unfortunately you’re not eligible,” Nvidia clarified to The Verge.

At the end of 2020, it's been reported that GeForce Now has over 5 million subscribers since its launch. With the news of Google Stadia stagnating and Amazon Luna still in its beta stage, GeForce stands as one of the stronger platforms for cloud gaming.
