NVIDIA's TegraX1 Chip, The Power Behind The Nintendo Switch, Likely Ending Production

Despite being a question that has hovered around the console since its launch, the lack of horsepower never stopped the Nintendo Switch from becoming a hot ticket item and high demand gaming device. The advantage of having AAA gaming on the go, be it first party Nintendo releases like Animal Crossing New Horizons and Splatoon 2, or ports of games like Doom Eternal, many developers have shown that as long as the Switch continued to fly off shelves, it was worth it to sacrifice some graphical fidelity and performance to have it be available for the Nintendo audience.

While talks and rumors about Nintendo's newest console have nothing officially confirmed, there could be some interesting news on the horizon regarding the future of the Switch. According to Gamereactor, a "person familiar with the matter" told the publication that NVIDIA plans to stop production of the Tegra X1 Mariko chip in 2021. Nothing was elaborated on what would happen with the current versions of the Switch and Switch Lite hardware.

This coincides with the rumors about new processors and an improved screen being manufactured for a "new Switch", which the speculation is the next iteration of Nintendo's hybrid device could be as powerful as the standard PlayStation 4 and could boast 4K capabilities for docked gaming. While Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa stated that there are no plans to manufacture new hardware and no new piece of equipment was set to be released in 2020 (mind you, this is the same company that said the 3DS would coexist with the Switch), they have to know that while they intend to milk the current Switch as long as it sells, there's definitely a finite amount of time they can do this in the wake of the PS5 and the Xbox Series X. Maybe they don't want to ward off current hardware and software sales by prematurely letting vital info leak, but there might some fire to these smoke trails.
