The announcement came earlier today and one of the mysterious of Overwatch's lore has been solved.  

Where is Dr. Liao? And just who the heck is she? 

In my previous post, I made mention that Dr. Mina Liao was the 6th founding member of Overwatch, but as of right now she never mentioned or even seen in the 3 years that Overwatch has been released. We saw images of her from the past - in the form of posters - but nothing substantial. 

That has all changed today with Echo's Origin Story which introduces our newest hero, and sheds some light on why we haven't seen Dr. Liao.

It appears that Dr. Liao was the person who created the Omnics. When this didn't go as planned - cause they like tried to kill everybody - she joined Overwatch in order to repent. 

In joining Overwatch, she created the Omnic "Echo" who is basically her. Her voice, her mannerisms, her personality. She is literally an "Echo" of her creator. 

As for Dr. Liao herself? It appears that she died in an attack on her lab. Nothing else is really known of this attack.  

Echo is going to be a really interesting character, lore wise, as her creator was a founding member of the team, but has been dead this entire time. Yet, Dr. Liao lives on through her creation. 

It's going to be interesting to see just how Echo interacts with the rest of the characters in the game, since up until the "Reunion" cinematic, she has been doormat.

Speculation currently is that she is going to be a healer. But I personally don't think so. I believe she is going to be a damage character, or a damage character in the same vein as Symmetra. She is going to provide a utility that isn't primarily focused on dealing damage. 

She is supposed to release "soon", but no actual date has been announced. I am guessing that she will be on the PTR next Tuesday with a full release a week after that. 

I am also assuming that Echo is going to be the last character released for Overwatch and we won't be seeing anybody else until Overwatch 2 - whenever that gets released. 

*UPDATE* The Overwatch Youtube channel has one again updated with a developer update from none other than Jeff himself. He goes into more of Echo's origin, and Dr. Liao's origin. He also goes through moves and what to expect.
