Patent For PS5 Dualshock Could Have Significant Differences

Speculation continues to permeate the video game news circles regarding the upcoming new hardware. These are always to be taken with a grain of salt, but the latest are details concerning potential designs of the PlayStation 5's Dualshock controller. The overall design based on the images available show that it very closely resembles the DS4's base model, perhaps more ergonomically pleasing

These images are based off the design that was leaked in mid November of 2019. As noted, gone is the light bar (I never understood the purpose of that in the first place) and the departure of mini USB to USB-C. What's new in these updated images is certainly fascinating. It appears that the Home button, a feature on the last two Dualshock models, is absent.

New to the controller are the set of back paddles, which looks pretty ambitious. It leads to a lot of speculation as to what they could be implemented for, but the idea of having some extra bumpers to map commands to may be incredibly beneficial. I would prefer those be functions like a home button or so and that motion sensor touchpad, which I was also puzzled by its inclusion, that seemed oversized.

Given the PS5's seemingly retooled design, it aims to be more clean and removes the busy nature of the DS4 with hopefully a longer and more conventional battery life. Nothing is quite official yet, so this all tallies up to more speculation. It's also been rumored that this patent could simply be a special controller for the PS4, in an Xbox Elite controller manner. There isn't necessarily correlation between the leaked images of the PS5 dev kit and this controller patent. Who knows, perhaps a month from now this will be radically different.
