Strong rumors had been circling for months about a Nintendo Switch port of Persona 5 was almost a guarantee. Speculation grew stronger when the game's protagonist, Ren Amamiya, or Joker, was announced as a guest character for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Well, on April 25th, a reveal for the expansion of the Persona 5 universe was announced, but it certainly wasn't what people expected. Instead of a direct port of P5, what was displayed instead was Persona 5 Scramble The Phantom Strikers...

For fans of the style, these are in the same line of games from developer Omega Force, known for the Dynasty Warriors series, as well as Hyrule Warriors and the recent Fire Emblem Warriors. Spinoffs from anime series, including One Piece Pirate Warriors, Fist of the North Star, and Dynasty Warriors Gundam.

For many expecting a true port of Persona 5, the recently announced Persona 5 S, this may come of as a disappointing bait and Switch [rimshot]. But Atlus and Nintendo have a very good working relationship, so it’s still not outside the realm of possibility (there was the dismal Tokyo Mirage Sessions on the Wii U, a decent game, but a commercial failure). Shin Megami Tensei V is currently in development under Atlus, which has two working divisions (P-Studios works on the Persona line of games and those spinoffs, so I can take a stab that any efforts of developing SMTV and a potential Persona 5 for the Switch aren’t intertwined)

I have fun with the musou style of games, so I think this may be well received, even if it wasn’t the grand announcement they wanted. These style of games are very flashy, boast more than solid controls, and are very satisfying. Persona 5 Scramble The Phantom Strikers doesn’t currently have a release date as of this writing, and will be available for the Nintendo Switch and the PS4.
