Phone Call Triggering Hostage Situation Near Ubisoft's Montreal HQ Deescalates, Nobody Harmed

November 13 Friday afternoon, an incident was reported that hostages were being held at a Saint-Laurent office building that housed Ubisoft offices. At about 1pm, a phone call to 911 reported that there was an armed robbery and hostages taken. After the call, employees staffed barricaded themselves in offices and on rooftops. A large number of tactical officers were dispatched onto the scene, including the canine unit and the SWAT team, as nearby residents were confused and shocked by the magnitude of activity taking place.

At around 3:30pm, the police reported that there no injuries and no clear threat was detected, most likely turning out to be a very bad hoax or prank. Ubisoft employees were evacuated out of the building calmly and investigations have begun to get to the source of this incident. "We are aware of the situation and working with the local authorities", a Ubisoft representative told Business Insider.

Due to the coronavirus, many Ubisoft employees have been working remotely, so the offices weren't heavily occupied on Friday. With the tumultuous times as tense as they have been throughout 2020, it's relieving to know this situation dissolved with no one hurt. Ubisoft has recently been under scrutiny regarding workplace safety and employee misconduct, it might not be too far off to believe that this form of "swatting" (an act of a third party sending authorities to a residence in response to an emergency) could possibly a form of retaliation at the company from fans seeking a form of retribution. This style of vigilante comeuppance can easily lead to endangering or even deadly results.
