PlayStation 5 Advisory: Don't Put Your PS5 Discs Into Your PS4

The PlayStation 5 has hit homes over the last several days. Many users still have yet to receive the hardware, but PS5 games and DualSense controllers have been arriving. In the UK, November 19th is the street date, and according to an article from PSU, who received some games ahead of time, the user attempted to insert Spider-Man: Miles Morales into their PlayStation 4 to see if the game could access the PS4 version of the game.

The disc, however, got jammed and they had a hard time removing it. Due to the console attempting to read it for "Miles Morales", hitting the eject button, does nothing and chancers are users will be greeted by an "Unrecognized disc" message. By using the manual eject screw at the foot of the console, it was able to be removed. This is likely due to despite the games being the same from PS4 and PS5, the PlayStation 5 reads Ultra HD Bluray. The PS4 and PS4 Pro does not.

The mistake may be a common one, as prior to the PlayStation 5's release, there was some murkiness regarding details of its backwards compatibility. While a great deal of PS4 games can be read on the new system and titles like Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Assassin's Creed Valhalla are essentially the same game, there are technical differences. The PlayStation 4 could get stuck in an endless loop of attempting to read the disc, and that could lead to damaging it.

Suffice to say, it's a wise idea to not put brand spanking new PS5 games in your PS4 or your PS4 Pro.
