PlayStation 5 Hits 30 Million Sales, Reports Supply Shortages Are Over

In its second year, the PlayStation 5 has been the console of choice for the average consumer. With the Xbox Series X|S keeping a modest pace, and the Nintendo Switch seeing a decline in retail interest for the first time since its launch, Sony's brand remains high in demand for this console generation. Based on recent information, it should be easier for enthusiasts to find the system in stores.

During Sony's CES Press Conference Event, PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan spoke about the PS5's strong end-of-the-year sales, curbing the difficult supply chain issues that impacted the world throughout the Covid-19 pandemic.

"We truly appreciate the support and patience of the PlayStation community as we managed unprecedented demand amid global challenges over the last two years", Ryan stated. "PS5 supply improved towards the end of last year, and I'm happy to share that December was the biggest month ever for PS5 console sales. Everyone who wants a PS5 should have a much easier time finding one at retailers globally, starting from this point forward."

For many a consumer, this should spell the end of having to work back-channels to acquire a PS5 anymore. Here's hoping the retailers cashed in while they could (sarcasm). Hitting 30 million worldwide sales, the PlayStation 5 has what could be an intriguing 2023. PSVR 2 is set to launch, and while it has an enormous price tag (at $549.99US, costing more than the console itself), there is likely to be invested interest. Along with that, Marvel's Spider-Man 2 is set to release in the fall, Final Fantasy XVI, and Marvel's Wolverine, which doesn't have a set release date, but is a project that has considerable anticipation.
