Concord, a team-based hero shooter that launched August 23rd, will be shut down on September 6th, the game not even lasting a month. Developed by Firewalk Studios, the game was released to poor sales and a mixed reaction from the populace. Well, the little of the populace that has played the game.
"We’ve been listening closely to your feedback since the launch of Concord on PlayStation 5 and PC and want to thank everyone who has joined the journey aboard the Northstar. Your support and the passionate community that has grown around the game has meant the world to us." the official statement posted on PlayStationBlog.com reads.
However, while many qualities of the experience resonated with players, we also recognize that other aspects of the game and our initial launch didn’t land the way we’d intended. Therefore, at this time, we have decided to take the game offline beginning September 6, 2024, and explore options, including those that will better reach our players.
While we determine the best path ahead, Concord sales will cease immediately and we will begin to offer a full refund for all gamers who have purchased the game for PS5 or PC. If you purchased the game for PlayStation 5 from the PlayStation Store or PlayStation Direct, a refund will be issued back to your original payment method."
It's not quite often a game flops this badly right out the gate. As mentioned, there was an incredibly low player count for Concord, with tracking on Steam charts not even cracking 700 players, and peaking at 660. The estimated sales indicate the game sold around 25,000 copies (15,000 on PS5, and 10,000 via Steam). PlayStation's PvE co-op shooter Helldivers II has fared better, though the player base has dropped off considerably in recent months. Foamstars, the Splatoon-inspired "party shooter" has become practically invisible and fell out of circles rather quickly. Concord, aiming to cut into the road that has been paved for team-based hero shooters, doesn't appear to whet the appetite.
PlayStation wanted an Overwatch, and ended up with Anthem.
