As PlayStation celebrates its 30 years as a staple of video games, and in a lot of ways remains the industry leader when it comes to console market share, the company may be digging into the past to place more of its dormant intellectual properties in the spotlight. This was brought to light during an interview from Famitsu with co-CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment Herman Hulst.
The topic arises during discussion of the success of Astrobot (2024's Game of the Year winner), which features many callbacks and homages to games from PlayStation's past. Famitsu's Garson Yajo asked if there was any interest internally to revive any of their dormant IPs.
"Our extensive IP portfolio is an important asset for PlayStation, and as part of our efforts to strengthen our portfolio, we continually explore opportunities to leverage our legacy IP as well as develop new franchises," Hulst replies.
Like Nintendo, though perhaps not as deep, PlayStation certainly has a deep library of classic games, some that have not been seen in two decades, if not longer. With series like Killzone, Ape Escape, Twisted Metal (which saw some fan acclaim with its television series on Peacock), Jak & Daxter, Resistance, and Sly Cooper, there would certainly be some fan demand in a return in any of these long-lost, but not forgotten names.
Which PlayStation franchises would you like to see make a return?
