It seems like nowadays, you'd have to read some very intricate tea leaves to get a read on what Sony's mission statement is supposed to be. With PlayStation celebrating three decades of console relevance, they revealed a special edition of the PS5. Sporting the metallic gray, this system pays homage to the original PlayStation released in 1994. These bundles will be available in limited quantity. This follows a week after the reveal of the PlayStation 5 Pro, a mild technical upgrade priced at a baffling $699.99 USD.
Along with the classic-designed console, the bundle will include a limited edition poster, cable ties stylized in the four PlayStation shapes, a PlayStation sticker, a PlayStation paper clip, and an original PlayStation controller-style cable connector housing. Pre-orders open on September 26th.
According to Dealabs and leaker BillBill-kun, the PS5 Slim (Digital Edition) will cost exactly $499.99 USD. "For the rest of the limited edition hardware, we will wait patiently until September 26 to know their final price," they write. The 30th Anniversary controller is priced at $79.99 USD, the same price as the Astrobot Dual Sense Limited Edition controller.
The aforementioned PS5 Pro is slated for a November 7th 2024 release date, with the limited quantity 30th Anniversary Collection console to be released November 21st 2024. Sony's marketing strategy remains a rather perplexing one, as celebrating its three decade anniversary is understandable.
But why the emphasis on more [expensive] hardware? the platform has seen a dearth of first party software, something the company used to tout strongly. In recent months, there's been a focus on only spotlighting and reimagining a handful of franchises, while stating they have few IPs to market. It's not like Sony's game division has an extensive backlog of dormant IPs that could be bundled to truly celebrate their anniversary...
