Xbox's Game Pass is currently one of the best deals in the gaming business, and is a good model to borrow inspiration from. We've seen efforts from the Nintendo Switch Online Service to broaden their catalog and offerings. Many pundits in the industry were anticipating a move by Sony, and this is certainly very intriguing news.
Reported by Bloomberg's Jason Schreier, PlayStation's new service (currently codenamed "Spartacus") will grant players access to modern and classic games via a subscription fee, and will be available on the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 line of consoles. Here's what current speculated details are:
- Planned Launch is Spring of 2022
- 1st Tier: Access to PS+
- 2nd Tier: Access to PS4 and select PS5 games
- 3rd Tier: Classic PlayStation libary, ranging from PS1, PS2, PS3, and possibly PSP games
- A broader expansion into cloud gaming
The standard online access and online play will naturally be a part of the package as well. Sony representatives and people close to project are not currently ready to speak about many of the more substantive details like pricing or availability.
