PlayStation State Of Play 2021 Wrap-Up Coverage

Sony's digital reveal show has finished up, and we here at Game Fix have the details from the fallout, in case you missed it! Like Nintendo Directs, and even E3 or PAX shows, these offerings should be met with a certain level of hype and expectations. With new hardware out (for those fortunate to get their hands on one), some upcoming software is a must to salivate over. So here's the deets!

Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time

Toys For Bob talks bringing the latest Crash Bandicoot adventure to the PlayStation 5. Bringing new features like native 4K and 60 frames per second, utilizing the haptic feedback on the Dualsense's adaptive triggers for more immersive gameplay. Expect this on the PS5 March 12 2021.

Returnal

Developer Housemarque's survival horror shows off some pretty intense action gameplay in their walkthrough video. Returnal looks to feature some great procedural generation, so the experience will likely seldom be duplicated every time you die. That reminds me of The Binding of Isaac in that aspect, so there's some looking forward to this one. Its initial release date was March 19 of this year, but a mild delay pushed it back to April 30 2021.

Knockout City

A multiplayer PvP game from Velan Studios and Electronic Arts, Knockout City looks like it combines elements of Splatoon, Fortnite, and the recently released Destruction All-Stars for a high impact online team-based competitive experience. Its colorful visuals are pretty striking. Knockout City is slated for a May 2021 release across the PlayStation 5, PS4, Xbox One and Series X|S, and the Nintendo Switch, with an open cross-play beta April 2-4.

Sifu (FIRST LOOK)

A first look at a new game from Sloclap Studios, Sifu looks like a reaction-based brawler game. Play as a young kung-fu student who looks to be getting his revenge throughout the city. Some of the hand-to-hand combat make me think a lot of Jet Li's Rise To Honor back on the PlayStation 2. Look for this one later this year for both the PS4 and PS5.

Solar Ash

The second game from Heart Machine, the makers of Hyper Light Drifter. This vast open world 3D platformer looks to challenge player reflexes in immersive, fluid action. It fascinates me that with the free-flowing and expansive gameplay displayed in games like Solar Ash, they almost render Sonic the Hedgehog irrelevant. But that's just my humble opinion, providing Sonic Team can evolve his series. Solar Ash is expected later in 2021.

Five Nights At Freddy's: Security Breach

The jump-scare phenomenon from 2014 that was a YouTube streamer's dream game is baaaaack! It's also abandoned the point-and-click security cam gameplay in favor of something a little more substantial and demanding. Now reimagined as a first person puzzle game, Five Nights At Freddy's: Security Breach might also tap more into the lore behind the murderous animatronic puppets. The change in art style is an interesting one, I don't feel the new character models come off anywhere near as unsettling as before. If you're a FNAF fan that's been starving for more, keep an eye out for this one in 2021.

Oddworld: SoulStorm

Oddworld returns. The series long known for its puzzle and stealth mechanics aims to reinvent aspects of its gameplay by incorporating new features into Abe's skill set. The Mudokuns you rescue are capable of aiding Abe in his missions and can help solve puzzles. The Oddworld series has always been critically acclaimed, and Abe has been one of the icons of the mid 90's, it's great to see him again. Look for Oddworld: Soulstorm April 6 2021. If you have a PS Plus account, you'll receive the PS5 verison for no extra cost.

Kena Bridge of Spirits

From Ember Labs, this PlayStation exclusive follows the journey of magical spirit guide Kena and her quest to aid those trapped between the living world and the spirit world to move on. Kena is another game that aims to make use of the Dualsense's adaptive triggers for using her bow when fighting enemies. Kena Bridge of Spirits will be available for the PS4 and PS5 August 24 2021.

Deathloop

From Arkane Studios, the team behind Dishonored and Prey, comes this stylish first person action shooter. Take the role of Colt, an assassin stuck in a time loop. In a nightlife that never changes, Colt is the only person on the island who retains events he's previously experienced. Very much like Arkane's Dishonored series, a lot of stealth, parkour, and mapping of enemy patterns will serve as the best way to take out enemies.

Final Fantasy VII Remake: Intergrade

The next "chapter" in 2020's much celebrated Final Fantasy VII Remake acts as more a supplementary side story that follows materia hunter Yuffie's venture to Midgard and meets up with new character Sonon Kusakabe. It doesn't appear that Sonon is playable by himself, more being incorporated with Yuffie's combat prompts.

As far as the narrative goes, it appears Yuffie and Sonon work with an expansion of Avalanche that ties through Utai, Yuffie's hometown. The leap to the PlayStation 5 also comes with more polished visuals, 60 frames per second, native 4K, and reduced load times, something that bogged down the experience of its initial release. I feel like if anyone was playing this with the belief that anything that happened in the original Final Fantasy VII meant anything, it's best to dash that out the window, as this is practically a completely different shift from the lore, for better or worse.

Overall, Sony's State of Play presents some decent titles on the mid-range end of the development spectrum to look forward to that will flesh out the library of the PlayStation 5 for the early adopters. Sure, there may not have been any information on God Of War Ragnarok or Horizon Forbidden West, but there will be a time and place for that in a development cycle that's still seeing complications from Covid-19.
