REPORT: 90's Era Sega Fighting Game Eternal Champions To Receive Film Adaption, Derek Connolly Attached To Project

Another video game adaptation will be in the works. This time, it appears Eternal Champions will get the live action film treatment for SkyDance Media. According to Deadline, Jurassic World and Detective Pikachu writer Derek Connolly is pinned to be a part of the production. Dana Goldberg, Dave Ellison, and Don Granger of SkyDance will serve as producers. Rob Ree will also oversee production, along with Aimee Rivera overseeing the project.

It's an interesting choice, but seemingly not uncommon for Sega to express interest in branching out their intellectual properties. Back in April, an animated television series for  Golden Axe to appear on Comedy Central was greenlit. Eternal Champions follows the story of warriors from various eras of civilization who meet grisly fates uniting to keep humanity from fading away, at the behest of the omniscient being known as the Eternal Champion. Early in the burgeoning era of fighting games, Eternal Champions set itself apart by focusing heavily on a strong narrative.

Initially released in 1993, Eternal Champions' popularity in the west grew, with a strong marketing campaign. Sega of Japan, however, struck down the idea of continuing it as a series, as to not take attention away from their keystone tournament fighting game, Virtua Fighter. EC saw an enhanced version for the Sega CD, Challenge Form the Dark Side, and two spin-off games, X-Perts and Chicago Syndicate.
