REPORT: Capcom Plans Major Changes To Resident Evil 4 Remake

The Resident Evil 4 Remake was announced in 2020, but there's been little details heard or seen since. Capcom has had their hands full with several mainline projects in recent years, and  have been following the success of the Resident Evil 2 and RE3 Remakes, which were met with critical acclaim. They patterned themselves after the revolutionary design that RE4 established, clearly they wouldn't want to do a shot-for-shot reboot, would they?

Reported by Video Games Chronicle, it turns out that while there aren't many official details (or even a formal announcement about its existence from Capcom) there were many internal disagreements about RE4 Remake's direction throughout 2021. As VGC states, the original report is courtesy of Fanbyte, which speculates the original production team, M-Two (a studio made of former Capcom and PlatinumGames developers), who worked on Resident Evil 3 Remake. However, after the less than stellar and mixed reception to RE3 Remake, Capcom shifted development responsibilities and the team behind the Resident Evil 2 Remake were put in charge of the project. It was also hinted that Capcom had reached out to the creator of the series Shinji Mikami to head its direction, but he turned it down, believing Tango Gameworks would "fall apart without him".

Further details indicate that the opening sequence where Leon Kennedy arrives in the town is set to take place at night, rather than day, as Capcom is looking for a more scary feel to the game, along with their goal to not go for the shot-for-shot formula. This also includes ideas that were reportedly left on the cutting room floor, like Leon fighting off living dolls, or getting possessed by a black smoke. That latter concept sounding more in the vein of Silent Hill, aiming for a psychological horror vibe.

Capcom perhaps wanted this announced and released in 2022, but the radio silence could be an indicator that this project has gone critical overhauls and may be further behind the development window they may have projected.
