REPORT | Sega May Consider Launching A Subscription-style Service For Their Games

"Games as a service" is aiming to become the normal means of action for publishers, as the practice of subscription platforms remains something the industry experiments with. There may be some discussion within Sega that this could be an idea they may explore. This information comes by way of BBC, where in an interview ahead of the premiere of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 movie (currently in theatres), Sega President Shuji Utsumi eluded to this becoming a possibility, but the talks are apparently in early phases.

"We're thinking something - and discussing something - we cannot disclose right now," he spoke.

With Xbox Game Pass being arguably the most successful format for game streaming in a Netflix-style presentation, it's natural that a large publisher/holdings company would aim to do the same with their library. Sony's classic titles come with their three subscription tiers. Nintendo's placed a large (and growing) portion of their catalog on their Nintendo Switch Online Service, and branching out with their expansion packs, which coincidentally enough includes a Sega Genesis portion. That knowledge alone would place this as a strange move.

The Sega Genesis (generally the platform Sega revisits) had a very beloved catalog that has seen at least one redistribution over the decades of their essential legacy games. In every way, it would come full circle for Sega, who was the first reported game company to feature online capabilities with the Sega Channel, which launched in 1994 and lasted until 1998. They've recently pulled 60 games from Steam, Xbox, Nintendo, and PlayStation. This saw classic games like Alex Kidd, Shinobi, and Crazy Taxi. That could be an indicator of something moving forward. It would be amusing to see Sega take so many games that were readily available for so long and pull them from storefronts an forcing fans to indulge their entertainment dollar into a new streaming service.
