REPORT: Sega Possibly Seeking $1 Billion Dollar Purchase Of Angry Birds Developer Rovio Entertainment

It's been a while since majors talk of a studio acquisition have been prominent, so here's a new one. According to the Wall Street Journal (via pay wall), Sega appears to be making a bid to acquire Rovio Studios, the developers of the mobile game franchise Angry Birds for the large sum of $1,000,000,000. This news comes from those very close to the situation, they indicate that the closing of the deal could be as early as next week.

This would be an interesting move by Sega Sammy Holdings, who for the better part of the last decade had invested heavily in mobile games across iOS and Android devices for their intellectual properties, including the Persona Series, Sonic the Hedgehog (which featured an Angry Birds crossover event in Sonic Dash), and the recently released 404 Game Re:Set, from Nier Automata creator and developer Yoko Taro. Back in 2021, Sega spoke about investing a billion dollars in game development and studio acquisit..., which included talks of "creating super games". Sonic Frontiers wasn't that "super game", perhaps the math adds up, should this deal come to fruition.

Finnish Studio Rovio Entertainment released Angry Birds in 2009, and it would go on to become one of the biggest game releases, ushering in an age of mobile game development. As of April 2022, the Angry Birds series has been downloaded over five billion times across its various incarnations. Despite its decline in popularity in recent years as other franchises have grown, the Angry Birds movie, released in 2016, is among the top ten video game film adaptations in history.
