RETRO REBOOT!! Captain America and The Avengers: SNES vs Sega Genesis

Now that most of the planet is Avengers Endgame'd out, I figured I'd take a look at Captain America and The Avengers! But why not drag the 16-bit wars into this and look at both the Sega Genesis and the SNES ports?

Without going into too much lengthy detail about the war between Sega and Nintendo for any readers who may not have grown up in the 90's, imagine the squabbles going back and forth between Sony and Microsoft, only put the arguments in grade school with children and not some 29 year old guys on Twitter. That, and these ads flatout ATTACKED each other.

Safe to say, the SNES trounces the Genesis in many ways, but Sega had gems up their sleeves that went beyond exclusives. They had some better ports, and Captain America and The Avengers is one of them.

The Genesis port was developed by Japanese arcade powerhouses DataEast (Heavy Barrel, Bad Dudes, and Windjammers), while the SNES port was in the hands of Realtime Associates, notable for...uh...BUG! on Sega Saturn. That game was kinda neat, but not amazing. Some educational games for tots on the N64. What else? *Google search* Iron Man and X-O Manowar in Heavy Metal?? *Drinks Purex*

While the SNES port has a more varied color palette and larger sprites, the animation is noticeably inferior, hit detection is significantly spottier, and it omitting of many sound effects removes cohesion from the action. The Genesis version has better hit confirmation, whereas on the SNES, I feel like I'm mashing a button, but the enemy no-sells it. Gone is also the debris, barrels, and objects swern about that you could throw at enemies. And the glorious dialog exchanges are missing from the Super Nintendo. That's a foul, I'm afraid.

It's much more satisfying to play this on Sega's 16-bit console (well, unless you have the arcade ROM on hand). The gameplay is much easier to grasp, the challenge is ever present, and it feels more faithful to the arcade game. The SNES version is just choppy and really unfun. I intend to delve back into superhero games on the 8-16 bit consoles, there were a plethora to choose from. I may even do another SNES vs Genesis. Next week starting May, it'll be CONTRA MONTH on Retro Reboot. Four weeks, four Contra games. Until next time, adios!
