SEGA Confirms New Virtua Fighter Entry In The Works

Amidst the revival of a handful of Sega franchises, there was one for the longest time it felt the brand has placed on the indefinite back burner. But it appears that a new Virtua Fighter game is confirmed to be in development. This story comes courtesy of Video Games Chronicle, as Justin Scarpone, the head of Sega's Global Transmedia Group verified that the iconic 3D fighting game is among the properties that was a part of the revival of dormant series during 2023's Game Awards, which included Shinobi, Golden Axe, and Crazy Taxi.

So we have a suite of titles in development right now that fall into that legacy bucket, which we announced last year at The Game Awards; Crazy Taxi, Jet Set Radio, Streets of Rage, Shinobi, and we have another Virtua Fighter being developed. And so all that’s very exciting.

While it has been a long while since the franchise has been a relevant name in the field of fighting games, it's a little fascinating to see Virtua Fighter casually tucked into the conversation. I suppose, to be fair, its core group of fans were teenagers in the 90's when combatants like Akira Yuki, Sarah Bryant, and Wolf Hawkfield dominated the scene. Virtua Fighter's last entry, Virtua Fighter 5: The Final Showdown, saw an updated re-release for the PlayStation 5, with a visual facelift used for the Lost Judgement and Like a Dragon series in 2023.
