Shigeru Miyamoto Offers Tour Of Super Nintendo World In Latest Direct

One of the best things about the Nintendo Directs is unlike E3 or PAX, where leaks have become abundant and surprises are often spoiled, you seldom have a clear idea of what you're going to be anticipating from them. In the 15 minute presentation, the father of Super Mario provided a tour of what to expect from Universal Studios Japan's Super Nintendo World.

The entrance way is stylized as a green pipe (how else does one travel throughout the Mushroom Kingdom?) that leads to a hall similar to Peach's Castle lobby from Super Mario 64, complete with a framed picture of a Bob-omb!, the first world and stage in the game you can access. Music from each of the familiar locations will be heard as you traverse throughout the park.

Miyamoto explains that the park will have many elements you can interact with through the use of Power-Up Bands that can access secrets hidden throughout or to play various activities. The band has a QR Code that can be linked to a smartphone, and the band will track your progress through the park. There are also other interactive elements, like the sleeping Piranha Plant, but Miyamoto did not reveal what this could do at this precise time, opting to keep many secrets for patrons in the future. Or perhaps something to showcase in a later Direct when the park is closer to officially opening. Other mini-games include using your Power-Up Band to knock a green Koopa Troopa shell though a warp pipe, which requires a bit of timing, to earn a key. According to Miyamoto, collecting keys will lead to an interactive encounter with Bowser Jr.

An underground cave portion is designed to give you the impression that you are shrinking as the blocks and structure around you grow larger. In the cavern, there are Bob-ombs that "explode" if you wander too close to them. At the end of the underground portion, there's a giant Bob-omb that serves as another interactive event, but Miyamoto is keeping that a secret for the time being.

The next part featured is the gift shop called the 1-UP Factory, where you can purchase T-shirts and such, including a TOKOTOKO Mario toy, that walks without being battery powered. The park will boast Mario themed foods, such as themed popcorn like Caramel Peach and Mushroom flavor. Along with a Mario Burger and a Super Mushroom Pizza Bowl, the Kinopio's Cafe will have a digital Chef Toad and windows to give the impression that it's being operated by Green Toads preparing your food.

The final portion teased is a brief trip into Bowser's Castle, which features Cup trophies from Mario Kart. The special course is an augmented reality Mario Kart ride.

The grand opening for Super Nintendo World at Universal Studios Japan is scheduled for February 4th 2021. Plans still remain to open Super Nintendo World parks in Hollywood, California and Orlando Florida in the future.
