Shigeru Miyamoto Hints A Possible Nintendo 'Cinematic Universe'

With the Super Mario Bros. movie getting, shall we say, a mixed reaction from the public (that set off a firestorm of Chris Pratt memes), Nintendo nonetheless has full confidence in its upcoming CGI film. The other voice roles include Keegan Michael Key as Toad, Charlie Day as Luigi, Julie Ann-Taylor as Princess Peach, and Jack Black as Bowser. "Prove me wrong", as they say, but it really feels like they selected known NAMES rather than appropriate for the roles. It's Mario, one of the most recognizable figures in the history of entertainment, but I digress.

According to NME, in a question and answer session during Nintendo’s second quarter financial results presentation with developer and director Shigeru Miyamoto, the subject of the company venturing into multimedia resurfaced. On twitter, the questions were translated by David Gibson.

Q: Super Mario movie, are there other movies to come?

A (Miyamoto): Super Mario Film is pretty much done, working on the last bit, have a very good feeling about it, but we are very careful not to betray customers and meet expectations, continue to work to polish the movie. [We] Would like to roll out with other IPs for movies etc, people should experience IP in variety of ways. But going one by one, not say doing many IP movies at same time.

Nintendo, of course, reassures that they will remain a video game publishing first and foremost. The have also been rumors circulating that a Donkey Kong movie with Seth Rogan voicing the titular character, but nothing confirmed on that front. With Nintendo's releases of Metroid Dread, as well as other noted intellectual properties like The Legend of Zelda, Star Fox, Kirby (who had an animated series back in 2001), and the Fire Emblem franchise, there's certainly an opportunity to translate these to the big screen. The biggest appeal of Nintendo's games have always been the gameplay over the narrative, so how would the lore translate to the big screen?
