Sonic The Hedgehog 30th Anniversary Announcements

Sonic Colors Ultimate was revealed and will release on September 7, 2021.

Today we received a first look at some of the upcoming projects, partnerships, and events to celebrate Sonic's 30th anniversary. The first installment of “Sonic Central,” Sega’s all-Sonic  announcement series, gave us some things to look forward to this year.

Virtual Symphonic Concert

On June 23, we’ll be treated to a (free!) virtual concert with iconic Sonic music. More info to come.

Ever wanted to be a Sonic mascot?

Other Video Game Collaborations
A handful of non-Sonic games will be getting some Sonic treatment this year. A few of the announcements included:

  • Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 - The Official Video Game: Playable Sonic avatar coming June 22.
  • Two Point Hospital: Sonic themed in-game items and customization options coming July 30.
  • Lost Judgement: Sonic The Fighters returns as a fully-playable arcade game within Lost Judgement on September 24.

More collaborations within other games will be coming throughout the year, according to today’s Sonic Central.

Sonic Animated News

Sonic Colors: Rise of the Wisps is coming in 2021. This two-part animation series announced by Roger Craig Smith, the voice of Sonic, takes place in the world of Sonic Colors. Based on the announcement, it sounds like we’ll be seeing more short form animation for Sonic beyond Sonic Colors: Rise of the Wisps.

The Sonic Prime animated show, coming to Netflix in 2022, brought a special visit by Joe Kelly, one of the showrunners of Sonic Prime. Joe revealed the show will be 24 episodes long and they are making something Sonic fans have never seen before.

Sonic Game News

Sonic Colors Ultimate coming September 7 with preorders already open. A remaster of the 2010 Wii game Sonic Colors, this looks to be a wonderfully updated version that we’ll enjoy on our consoles!

Sonic Origins coming in 2022. This is a compilation of original Sonic games, including the original Sonic the Hedgehog for Sega Genesis, as well as sequels Sonic 2, Sonic 3 & Knuckles, and Sonic CD. Sega teased that we’ll see some form of fresh content with this release. While we don’t know exactly what that means, we’re sure to hear more about it from Sega in the future.

Next Main Sonic Game Teased for 2022: The Sonic Central video ended with a very short Sonic teaser alluding to the next main Sonic game that’s in development. No title or specific release date was announced. It seemed more of a “Hey, we’re working on this” kind of teaser. Maybe we’ll hear more later in 2021?

Expanding Current Sonic Games

Sonic Mania and Team Sonic Racing are now available on Amazon luna.

On June 1, Sonic Forces, Team Sonic Racing and Sonic Mania are coming to PlayStation Now.
