The mountains of feedback to the Sonic the Hedgehog trailer released back in late April was so severe that it was virtually impossible for anyone at Paramount to notice. To say fans were less than happy with the CGI mockup of the Blue Bomber would be a gross understatement. Filmmaker Jeff Fowler may avoid a catastrophic directorial debut by deciding to ultimately rework the design of Sonic to resemble a CGI nightmare people are familiar with, and in a tweet gave a date pushed past its originally projected November release date.
Now that this golden carrot has been grabbed by the fans, how much will an overhaul to the character design mitigate any possible flaws of the script, acting, or storytelling? Because I think that the outrage over his look is such a Sonic exclusive trait amongst the fans. Sure, the other video game movies can do a clunky job of nailing the likeness of the characters, and maybe the advent of social media lead this to be more vocal than, say, Silent Hill or Double Dragon. But the Sonic the Hedgehog design almost single-handedly keeps him relevant in light of nearly two decades of below mediocre games (Sonic Mania and Sonic Boom Fire & Ice had no involvement from Sonic Team, probably the reason why they were actually good), so I suppose betraying his iconic appearance teeters violently into blasphemy.
I look forward to seeing the reviews, because I get a feeling that they will be akin to, "a generic action film, but hey, it looks a little more like Sonic now!." If a better design leads to a bigger projected box office draw, it should help mitigate any extra costs it's going to accrue by having to rework Sonic's appearance from scratch. Here's to the best, and here's also hoping they get rid of Gangsta's Paradise to sell this turkey. Go find Hoobastank or something, a band that can closer relate to the source material. Anything but Coolio.
